Fibromyalgia is finally recognized as an official diagnosis! Please share this information
On October 1, 2015, fibromyalgia finally got its officially approved ICD-10-CM official code in the United States.
The ICD-10-CM, which stands for International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, Clinical Modification, is a list of diagnostic codes for the Medicare and Medicaid care centers and the National Center for Health Statistics. -CM is based on ICD-10, the statistical classification of diseases published by the World Health Organization.
ICD codes are widely used in the health sector, including doctors, insurance companies and government agencies. They are used to identify diagnosed and classified diseases and disorders.
before October 1, in the diagnosis of a patient with fibromyalgia, doctors received general code 729.1 – myalgia and myositis, unspecified. Any type of muscle pain or inflammation can be incorporated into the code. But FM is recognized as a separate entity with its own code M79.7 – Fibromyalgia.
The fact that fibromyalgia has its own diagnostic code prevents doctors from insisting that it is not real. The World Health Organization and the United States government have formally agreed.
The ICD-10-CM codes are used by insurance companies, Medicare and Medicaid. So far, some insurance companies have refused to cover fibromyalgia treatments, insisting that it is not a real disease. They can’t say the same.
Despite the disadvantage of not being determined solely on the basis of a diagnosis, fibromyalgia recognized as a legitimate diagnosis is one of the reasons, it is sometimes used as a basis for rejection and can lead to a slightly simpler disability.
Another diagnostic code will improve the consistency of fibromyalgia research. In his recent article in the National Pain Report, Ginevra Liptaň, MD noted: “The new code will also allow for a more in-depth analysis of the treatment of fibromyalgia outcomes. The details of many of these observational studies are collected by following these codes. diagnostic. Without their own diagnostic code, fibromyalgia studies have been hampered by gouache data, including data from patients with real fibrous, but by another disease that causes muscle pain. ”
The culmination of a long journey
The path to the legitimacy of fibromyalgia has been long and difficult. After letting him languish for many years, the United States government began to understand that fibromyalgia was real. The FDA pioneered in 2007 when the first drug was approved for the treatment of FM. So in 2012, the Social Security Administration issued a decision recognizing fibromyalgia as a legitimate obstacle. Today, in 2015, Medicare and Medicaid care centers and the National Center for Health Statistics officially established a diagnosis of the FM code.
This completes the trio of legitimacy and constitutes a celebration worthy of the name in March!
