Fibromyalgia, pain and disability.

When you are sick with fibromyalgia, it seems like part of you leaves to never come back. Remember how you were before and that sometimes makes you fall into a pit that is very difficult to get out of. They may be diseases that are obvious to the eyes of others, or as in the case of fibromyalgia, their interior may be destroying little by little and this is not perceptible to the naked eye, leading to a void in which misunderstanding and their own limitations take account of you day after day. Leading you to a state of total disability.

This May celebrated International Fibromyalgia Day, is a chronic disease that mainly produces sleep, extreme fatigue and musculoskeletal diffuse pain. Although, in fact, fibromyalgia has more than one hundred symptoms.

Today it affects 5% of the population, mainly women.

It is not yet known exactly what produces it, nor is there a cure; what is clear is the level of disability that occurs in the lives of those affected, which unfortunately does not seem to be taken into account in these times.

Activities like making the bed are the most painful, something as necessary as fun, whether dancing or just laughing, leads to extreme fatigue that causes shortness of breath and heart palpitations. Playing with your kids or running after them becomes impossible.

Your life changes completely, you cease to be who you were to become someone unable to lead a normal life.

The lack of restful sleep affects your mind very negatively, producing gaps, lack of reflexes, thinking clearly and even lack of coordination. It has been shown that patients with fibromyalgia do not maintain a linear REM phase while they sleep, but that there are altered spikes that prevent them from having a deep sleep. It’s like you do not sleep.

The phrase “it  hurts everything  ” is repeated daily in the life of the patient with   fibromyalgia.

The fight starts when you get out of bed every morning, with   extreme tiredness  , stiffness taking over your body, your first minute of the day is really exhausting. After overcoming it, it is possible that the energy lasts only a few hours, and after that you will be exhausted again, as if you had finished an intensive day with the guard included.

The threshold of   pain   is so low that a simple caress or hug causes your skin to burn, making physical contact especially complicated.

Everything hurts  , sometimes even to your nails or hair. The pains only seem to reduce at rest, but you can not stay in bed all day, so you prefer to fight it and lead a normal life, although this will negatively affect your health by creating new outbreaks because of your high demand.

You feel tired, feel sore, helpless, worthless.

All this leads to a deep depression from which antidepressants do not help you, the only way to overcome it would be to stop thinking about it, but unfortunately it is impossible, you have to work to eat, pay the house and keep your children, and everything effort, however small, reminds them of their limitations.

People do not understand you, you have an invisible disease, you can not see it, but you carry it inside. And the worst is not the lack of understanding, the worst is that they question what you feel. After spending a few years as a doctor until finally you are diagnosed with   fibromyalgia  , you have to face them not to believe in you, to be called vague, to be informed that you are the victim; They not only do not help you, but they also sink you into the mud.

The medication does not help much, they only manage to stun you more, and that if you are lucky not to be affected by the side effects. They recommend exercise, within their limitations, of course. You can stretch for five minutes and can not get off the couch for two days.

You can not work or take care of your home or your family. But you may not have an acceptable quality of life because although   fibromyalgia   is a chronic disease that causes   disability  , it is not really recognized when applying for a disability. Yes, it is, it is a real disease, but apparently for some it is not, which is a bit humiliating.

Few people have managed to be heard, not without being forced to declare their case before a judge to exhaust all their savings in lawyers and forensics, then get a minimum pension. But if   fibromyalgia   affects you as a young person, cutting your life completely, you have nothing to do because you have not contributed enough.

And it does not matter if all of this complicates your existence, if in addition to everything previously mentioned, it drastically reduces the chances of owning your own life.

Many young people see something impossible as simple as a family, not only because of fears about their physical problems, but because of personal or family relationships are not come to fruition. Not everyone accepts, much less learn to live with a sick person.

Failures couple, work, family … or simply feel like a failure as a person by not being able to do what you ask the body or what sends your heart, not only cause depressions, but all this leads to the feeling destroyed and many people have decided to end their suffering.

These people deserve to be treated with the same rights as anyone, because they are people, and only thus do they have the right to a dignified life, have the right to smile, to enjoy life and family, to be understood and accepted, if valued and respected. To feel the support of doctors and public institutions. They have the right to feed themselves and live under a roof that they can afford.
