Thyme Tea Recipe
– 1c boiling water
– 1 tsp dry or 1T fresh thyme
– Ginger slices
– Honey to taste
– Warm your tea cup with hot water.
– Pour away the water.
– Put thyme in the cup. Add fresh boiling water and cover.
– Leave to steep 3 to 5 minutes. Add more thyme for a stronger flavor.
– Steeping too long will make the tea bitter. Use honey or stevia to sweeten.
– Add ginger slices and/or lemon slice if desired.
According to livestrong.com, there are some side effects to consider before drinking thyme tea. Juan R. Avila, author of Professional’s Handbook of Complementary and Alternative Medicines, recommends avoiding the tea if you have a “known sensitivity to plants in the mint family such as rosemary, basil, catmint, hyssop, oregano and celery.” You should also stay away if you have an allergy to grass.
Avila also cautions against using thyme leaves if you have a history of heart disease, peptic ulcers or other gastrointestinal disorders. “If you experience chest pain, shortness of breath, tightening of the throat, skin rash or swelling of the joints after drinking thyme tea, seek immediate medical attention.”
